A couple of weeks ago I joined KT and Miss N for dinner at Mejico (105 Pitt St, right next to Jamie’s Italian which I wrote about here). Previously this space was a 7/11 convenience store (or Kwik-E mart as KT says!), so it was interesting to see how they had converted the space into a funky, brightly coloured Mexican restaurant.
The food was super fresh and tasty (as you would expect from most Mexican places) and came out fast! See the menu for more details but here are some pics of what we had:
Each table has a mortar and pestle as the centrepiece which is used for making…..
…the signature guacamole at your table in front of you. Talk about fresh! You eat the guac with deliciously sweet yet salty and crispy golden plantain chips.
Next we put the ‘Rodriguez Farm Chorizo’ salsa made with persian feta, sherry, black beans, smoky paprika and charred serrano chilli salt on more golden plantain chips. It was so delicious that we ordered another serving! We also shared ceviches (a South American seafood appetizer) made of scallops, avo, pomegranate, jalapeno and eschallots and served topped on tiny, crispy tostadas – it was very fresh and citrusy. Yum!
We finished our meal with with some blackened corn and lamb tacos which were warm, hearty and filling (despite looking like small portions!).
The girls had sangrias and I had a chia tea (which is apparently good for you!).
The water was poured from tequila bottles.
I recommend booking in advance as they are very busy at the moment. It could be because they are trendy and new, or the location is central, or the food is actually really good. They even send you an email confirmation for your booking and a follow-up email the day after thanking you and requesting feedback. Oh and they also played a bit of old-school RnB at the beginning of the night – so I was pretty impressed!
I hope you try it soon – it’s worth it!
