I didn’t have a lot of time to explore Auckland in New Zealand because I was there for work. So between meetings and working from my hotel room, I had to somehow squeeze in a catch up with an Australian friend who now lives there, plus a few dinners and a visit to the Sky Tower in the SkyCity Complex.
The Sky Tower is definitely worth the trip and the money. The glass elevator that takes you to the 60th floor in 40 seconds at 18kph was thrilling and the views from the top were breathtaking. I think it was the best way for me to really see all of Auckland in such a short amount of time.
I even bought the super cheesy photos of me superimposed onto various Sky Tower related scenes. (They asked me to pose like this, by the way, I would have posed with only one hand on the hip!).
I also enjoyed dinner at the Sky City complex on both nights. The first evening was ribs, potato skins, skirt steak and other delicious share plates at Depot and the second evening was pricey but delicious and fresh Japanese at Masu. I didn’t take any photos because I was with my colleague, so you’ll have to trust me when I tell you it was good.
I found Auckland, overall, to be a less busy version of Sydney. They had plenty of tall buildings, a harbour and a bridge. It was also a little grimy and unfriendly. I liked Wellington a lot better with its mountains and sea and quieter feel.
I’m glad I saw Auckland but I don’t really feel the need to visit again. Especially when the rest of New Zealand looks so natural and beautiful! But it’s a great place to stop before or after travelling around the island.
