Weekend Away in Forster, New South Wales

My boyfriend and I spent a weekend away at Forster-Tuncurry on the North Coast in the Great Lakes District.  We left Sydney on Friday night and arrived at the Dorsal Hotel about 3 hours later at midnight.  Being a small hotel, the reception was closed when we arrived but the staff were kind enough to leave our keys under the doormat.

The hotel’s Superior Room was large and had a beautiful view of Forster beach.  It wasn’t, however, very well appointed with old furniture, a relatively small bathroom and an empty kitchenette without plates or cutlery.  We also needed to swipe the room key cards at least 3 times before our door was unlocked.  Furthermore, the hotel is separate to the restaurant downstairs so room service was unavailable. This spectacular view, however, and the friendly staff were well worth the modest amount we spent on the room.

After a lazy sleep in on Saturday morning we enjoyed a quick and delicious breakfast at Beach Bums Café which is right on Forster Beach.  After breakfast  we drove over the bridge to Tuncurry and went for a walk past the Rockpool and towards Nine Mile Beach.

We enjoyed a late lunch at Beach Bums Café.  I had a light prawn and rice noodle salad while my boyfriend filled up on a burger with the works.

That evening we picked up takeaway grilled salmon from Beach Street Seafoods and fell asleep to the sound of waves crashing against the rocks.

The next morning, we woke up early for a quick dip in the Forster Ocean Baths before it started drizzling.  I loved my second time in salty ocean water and wished I had brought my prescription goggles to feel confident enough to swim.  I’ll have to remember to pack them next time!

Before heading back to Sydney, we fuelled up on a nutritious breakfast at Hamilton’s.  I enjoyed a cup of black tea with a plate of my favourite foods – eggs, sourdough bread, avocado, spinach, mushrooms and roasted tomatoes.  My boyfriend enjoyed coffee and a flavoursome dish of baked eggs with chorizo and oysters topped with spinach and feta cheese.

The service everywhere, at the hotel, cafes and shops, was always genuine and friendly.  People have time, listen and try to help you.  It’s something that seems to be difficult to find in a big city like Sydney.

Needless to say, our weekend away left us feeling relaxed, well fed and recharged, ready to face another busy week in Sydney.
