Treasures from the Palace of Versailles and Light Insallations at the NGA, Canberra

I wanted to share some photos from the grand exhibition ‘Treasures from the Palace of Versailles’ held at the National Gallery of Australia in Canberra even though it finished last month.

The line to get in to the exhibition itself was incredibly long as my best friend K and I went during the final weeks of showing. It was also fairly crowded once we were inside, but we were able to slowly  work our way through the incredible sculptures, paintings, tapestries, (enormous) rugs, furniture and so much more. It was informative, interesting and very beautiful. I can’t believe how much work, effort and detail went into everything  to make the palace beautiful for the royal family.

The exhibition ends with perhaps my favourite piece – a painting of King Louis XVI with a look of despair when writing his last testament in the tower.

On our way out, we stopped by the large light installation/sculpture by James Turrell ‘Within without’ 2010.

My work is about space and the light that inhabits it. It is about how you confront that space and plumb it with vision. It is about your seeing, like the wordless thought that comes from looking into fire. — James Turrell

This is what I captured through my lens during the day.  It must look quite pretty during sunrise or sunset or at night time with a cloudless sky.

After our culture fix K and I enjoyed beverages at the street side cafe outside the gallery in the hot sun.

The National Gallery of Australia has some great exhibitions like this one (and the Toulouse Lautrec exhibition I saw years ago). I think a trip to visit the gallery in Canberra is totally worth it.
